Oceanic Air, flight 815, is involved in a terrible crash on an island, or rather a series of islands, located somewhere within a magnetic region of the world (Bermuda Triangle like, but not). The privately owned island is the home of a long term project known only as the Dharma Initiative whose mission has been to conduct a series of experiments on both humans and animals alike. The experiments are probably about mind control and mind power...along those lines. Who knows exactly what or cares why at this point? It's not important anymore because the entire project went haywire. And some of the subjects of the experimentation, (Ben and his group) rioted and took control over the entire compound, killing most of the doctors and scientists. (I believe there were a handful that escaped and are somewhere else within the islands and have the children from the crash safely with them) The people back at the mainland in charge of the entire experiment have no idea the project has run amuck and have continued making supply drops and contact as necessary. However, of late, the project updates have not been making much sense to them. With fear that something may have gone wrong on the island, they have sent people to check up on the project. (The boat which is located off the islands and with whom Jack is trying to make contact with Naomi's phone.) Ben knows this can't happen or everything he's been doing on the island will end. Will the world come to an end? No, but Ben's world will. John Locke has almost been fully converted to Ben's side, so he has been a great help in keeping Jack and the rest under control until they (Ben's group of NUTS) can figure out exactly what to do with them or how to convert them.
My Conclusion of the season finale and prediction for next season: Everything we saw was just another of Desmond's visions. We know that if the course of events leading up to the vision are changed, the vision does not play out intact. We already know now that its not penny's boat out there, so we can safely assume that Desmond will pull Charlie out of the blown out portal and save his life. Further we will see that Desmond realizes that since it's not Penny's boat, any rescue other than that would lead to Jack becoming a total drug addict psycho. So, Desmond returns to the island with Charlie, and they take the phone from Jack and refuse to let him make the call. The boat people land on the island and we discover that they are dangerous to the survival of anyone there and what's left of Ben and his group team up with the losties to take out the boat people before they can report back too much information to the mainland headquarters. That is my forecast for next season.
